This version of Mr Nutz is unique to the Amiga. The SNES/GBA version bares little resemblance to this game other than being the same character.

You start the game in a Zelda style map zone which you explore to find bombs to clear you path, feathers to enable your gliding ability and hit points (life energy) to protect you from dying. You also find the actual game levels on the map which show up as red flags if you have not completed them yet, or green if you have. There are also blue flag bonus levels for extra bonuses.

The great thing about Mr Nutz is if you are clever, you can avoid dying, but it gets quite hard none the less. You see when you get hit by something a little hit points drops off your meter but will hang around the level where you can chase it down and reclaim it. Judge it badly and you can end up losing another while trying to rescue the one you just lost, clever.

The game also makes clever use of the Amiga audio filter. When you go under water it turns on the filter to make it sound more muffled. The longer you stay under water, Nutz changes to bluer until he starts losing hit points which again, you can always chase after should you desire.

Its quite hard to put into words just how this all works and makes such a fun game, at least for the first world. I found the game difficulty really ramped up into the second world at which point my disk corrupted so I never get round to playing further.

I still love to go back and play those early levels though now through the Internet I was able to finally obtain a replacement copy. But there seems to be so many newer more interesting games these days for me to get round to playing with the same intensity as when the Amiga was king.
